GRACE WEBER

I had no idea that little Grace that I’d seen sing back in Milwaukee as a child many years ago (with CAPITA Productions), had grown up to still be singing and giving the people good music. My sister called me up one day and said ‘…NiSi, you remember Grace?’ If you don’t know Grace… you’re welcome (in advance). Grace Weber is an American R&B singer, songwriter and producer from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. She lives in Los Angeles right now but still keeps her ties to the 414.  Over her career, she has written for and collaborated with artists like Masego and Chance the Rapper. Grace won a Grammy for the song “All We Got” (feat. Kanye West and the Chicago Children’s Choir) on Chance the Rapper’s mixtape, ‘Coloring Book.’ Weber has performed on national television shows such as Apollo and The Oprah Winfrey show (she even got a check, nice check at that).

Grace still represents for the 414 and one thing I found amazing about her, is her Music Lab. The Music Lab is a FREE monthly music and arts education program and talent accelerator for greater Milwaukee area high school students! At The Music Lab, students have the opportunity to learn about the music and entertainment industries through featured guests. They are also given the opportunity to collaborate, perform, and build relationships with their peers.

The season finale of Grace Weber’s Music Lab is LIVE TONIGHT, be sure to click HERE to RSVP and see if you can still gain access.

SEAN STEWART-GODFREY

I saw the beautiful, Sean Stewart- Godfrey before I ever heard the power in her voice. Sean is the wife to Brandon Godfrey who performs with the #SoulofMotownVegas. My good friend, Cj (who also performs in the Soul of Motown), posted an Instagram video of Sean and Brandon performing as NPerson for their weekly show. I was like okay ma’am, she has some pipes. I finally got to see the Soul of Motown show when I went to Vegas for my 40th bEARTHday. I had to get to another show so I didn’t get a chance to meet her, however we’ve connected through social media. I just knew she had some music showing off the vocals, so I asked and SHE DID!

SVNNH

In life, unexpected things happen. Fortunately for me, sometimes I am in the right place at the right time and knew the right people. I met SVNNH because of knowing Keema Mingo. I met Keema because she is an amazing director. She needed another makeup artist for a parade that her daughter was performing in a few years ago. We’ve stayed in touch over the years and when she unexpectedly needed a makeup artist for SVNNH’s debut music video, she called me and I was available! SVNNH is a beautiful soul, talented and definitely is a name you need to remember.

MalicaMusic

This beautiful lady, you’ve probably heard her thoughts in a song because she wrote it. However, her voice is just as amazing as her pen. I learned of Malica through my ex husband because he shared a video of her talking about her experiences being in the music industry, sharing gems of what to look out for. Dibbling and dabbling with singing and acting all of my life and in the process of putting my own project (did y’all hear that? I’m working on my own project… we’ll talk about that later), she continually shares her gift and lessons she’s learned. Through her social media, she shares the importance of simply living and embracing every moment.

I met Toya through my Bridal Makeup bestie, Courtney of Courtney K Beauty. Toya is an amazing hairstylist and has an amazing show that touches on a lot of different subjects. She recently brought in her boyfriend, Ron to co- host and it definitely gives her show a vibe because you get the male/female perspective (and you can feel the love between them). Here’s how you can connect with Toya:

Again, Courtney for the connect. I was brought in to assist with makeup services for a show that Brittany was doing. We stayed in touch after that show and she has continued to produce show after show that provides awareness for issues like Alzheimer’s disease. IAlign is not only a radio show, Brittany has her hands in dance and music, to name a few. Here’s how to connect with Brittany:

I met Molly through the homie Aj (who is more like a brother). We’ve stayed connected because of her support of me as a Makeup Artist, as well as my support of her business, Ajah Lip Creme. Most of the bridal parties that I have provided makeup services to have received Ajah Lip Creme in their touch up bags to keep their lips popping and moisturized. Here’s how you can stay connected:

Through the Eyes of NiSi- Episode 5: Artist Spotlight- The Soul of L.I.V.

Liv Warfield

“L.I.V. talks from her soul…,” I heard these words in one of the first songs I heard from Liv Warfield. It was a live version of the song “Brotha Man.” This amazingly talented woman definitely told the truth and is most definitely one of my favorite artists.

About Liv: “A former track star and gymnast, Peoria, Illinois-born Liv Warfield began building her legend, in of all places, Portland, Oregon. Despite having no formal background in singing, she gained the respect of local superstars and became an icon in her own right.

While she takes cues from musical influences like Nina Simone, Etta James, Sade, Tina Turner, and Mary J. Blige, Warfield has carved out a style all her own, which can best be described as “alternative soul with a lil bit of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” In 2006, she self-released her debut album “Embrace Me.” By 2009, she caught the eye of the one-and-only Prince and ultimately joined his group the “New Power Generation.”

After touring for several years and soaking up as much knowledge as she could from the ultimate music mentor, Warfield made her big splash on the national scene in 2014, first as a featured artist for Vh1’s “You Oughta Know” campaign, and then with the release of her major label debut album “The Unexpected,” which was executive produced by Prince. What followed were show-stopping performances on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and “The Arsenio Hall Show;” a 2014 Soul Train Music Award and nominations for two others; a BET Best New Artist Award nomination; an interview with National Public Radio; and high-profile cosigns from Lionel Richie, Cindy Lauper, and Nancy Wilson of HEART. That same year, Warfield’s performance closing out Essence Fest was hailed as one of the most memorable after shows at the New Orleans House of Blues. In 2015, the accolades only kept growing, with Warfield and the NPG Hornz being named one of the top 10 bands to see at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. It’s no wonder she has left celebrities like Letterman declaring it’s time to “cancel show business!” ~from Liv’s website

I don’t remember the day, nor the hour but I was watching The Arsenio Hall Show and the musical guest was Liv Warfield backed by Prince’s New Power Generation and her soulful background singers singing, “Stay (Soul Lifted).” From that day forward, I have been hooked.

Where it all began…

It’s something about live instrumentation and stage presence… its something about Liv leaving it all on the stage; not caring if her hair is messed up or if she’s making faces- she is providing you with an experience. It’s Liv being her authentic self in her live Instagram videos for Whiskey Wednesdays or allowing us to take a peek inside her experiences, breathtaking views, or simply just living in the moment when the music overflows from her soul.

The amazing thing about having my own radio show, is having the ability to introduce the world to music that I love; to the amazing musicians that I’ve encountered whether in person or through their gifts.

Through the Eyes of NiSi: Episode 1-Say Thank You

The Brown Family (From left to right: Nick, Mom, Tina, Dad, NiSi)

DID YOU MISS THE 1ST SHOW?!?!?! Whether you were there for it or catching up here, thank you so much for being apart of my journey. Ya girl had no idea that I’d be going to radio but here we are. Here is where we can continue the conversation. Ask questions, provide feedback, network and connect.

Let’s Recap!

So, on Episode 1, I left my screen door open a little bit to help you get to know me and to also say thank you to who has been apart of my journey thus far.

I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (yes there are black people there). My family is my everything! You’ll learn more about them as you get to know me. In case you know somebody that might know somebody; I went to Keefe Ave, Samuel Morse Middle, Rufus King, and Milwaukee School of Entrepreneurship. I grew up dancing with Deva Houston and Ko-Thi Dance Company, I was involved in community theatre, singing and ushering in church, modeling in department store fashion shows. My parents put me in summer programs to expose me to different occupations and career paths. I was always doing something (not much has changed now) but that opened my eyes to the possibilities.

On the show, we talked about poetry and how I got my start with Haiku’s in school. In elementary school, the first poem I learned was ‘Hey Black Child” by Useni Eugene Perkins. Eventually I got the chance to hear poetry at The Mecca, Still Waters Collective on the mic… I listened to Jessica Care Moore on Apollo and was mesmerized. I sat and listened to Sonia Sanchez while at Bennett College. After putting it down for a while, Lyrics and Love brought my joy of poetry back to the forefront.

Share your Haiku in the comments.
